Registry

An alien who can show presence in the U.S. since before January 1, 1972, can obtain permanent residence but must show good moral character and meet other minimal requirements. This benefit was last updated by Congress in 1986. There have been periodic proposals to advance the 1972 date, but such proposals have not yet been passed into law.
